From the very beginning of “Expedition Whydah” nearly thirty years ago, our mission, under the direction of underwater explorer Barry Clifford, has been summed up in the simple phrase “Education through Exploration”.
We do this by discovering, recovering, conserving and displaying historical artifacts from beneath the seas, worldwide, in order to push back the frontiers of knowledge of mankind’s maritime past.
In so doing, we have:
discovered The Whydah Galley, with the world’s only pirate treasure, off Cape Cod;
identified at least eight shipwreck sites off Madagascar, including some of the most important pirate ships in history, such as Captain Kidd’s Adventure Galley, as well as Great Mahomet, Fiery Dragon, Mocha and others;
conducted archaeological survey projects off Haiti that have identified not only four shipwrecks associated with the pirate Henry Morgan–including his flagship Oxford–but also the probable resting-place of Santa Maria, flagship of Christopher Columbus;
and have explored many other shipwrecks in the North Atlantic, the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean.
We have also created this web-site as a means to further communicate our discoveries.
We hope you enjoy it.
The Project Team

One of the world’s best-known undersea explorers, Barry Clifford has been involved in archaeological investigations beneath the waves for virtually his entire adult life. In 1984, after several years of research and exploration, Clifford discovered the only verified pirate shipwreck ever found.
